Awareness is Growing!

In this video report by Angela Reece, of Columbia University School of Journalism, we hear from Full Figure Fashion Week founder Gwendolyn Devoe, singer Alexandria Sundbye and The Fat Apple NYC blogger Melissa Davis.

They express the need for plus-size boutiques and awareness that more and more designers and stores are carrying plus-sizes.

This is exciting news for us and you! The options for fashion forward and conventional looks for curvy women is growing as is the need for boutiques to bring you these looks.

We are excited by the growing awareness of the needs of the plus-size shopper. Curvaceous K™ hopes to fill this need for all curvy women in New York and perhaps for curvy women everywhere in the future.

What is your experience in shopping for clothes that fit your shape? Leave us a comment and we will make sure it gets posted for your fellow shoppers to see!

Chelsea Settles Final Episode

It's sad to see that Chelsea Settles has come to an end. This final episode is not an ending but a new beginning for Chelsea.

To begin with, Chelsea feels great anxiety over her argument with her trainer Angela over her decision whether to stay or move with Rory to Tennessee. It really wasn't such a big deal but they made the effort to make it so. I did feel good for her when Angela told her that she would support her no matter what she decided.

It was exciting to see her run the 5K with Angela. I was so proud of her when she was able to finish it. Jenna went with but walked it. It was still a great accomplishment for Jenna as well who gave up "bacon and twinkies" to do this with Chelsea.

On the work front, Chelsea waits on pins and needles to hear what Laura says about her promotion to marketing and events coordinator. This was the job she was "competing" for against Ashley her coworker. Laura ends up telling her that she didn't need a full time marketing coordinator. A bit of a blow to her since she was under the belief that there was a job at the end of this race.

A big shock to me was that Ashley had no intention of going for that job and that she was very supportive of Chelsea and her dreams. I have a better opinion of her now than I did before. I am sure that was the idea in the first place.

The episodes true question is whether or not Chelsea is going to stay in L.A. or move to Rory's base in Tennessee and become something else.

We do get the answer to that question by the very end. She decides to stay. It isn't the safe choice but I feel that it is the right choice.

Love is a funny thing at times. Rory is her first true love. I have had more than one true love as most people that have some years under their belt have. If there is a way to make it work, you will find it. It will be hard to do so with them being in different parts of the country but with some time a balance could be reached.

She needs to see her dreams come true. Those dreams cannot be sought on an Army base in Tennessee. Perhaps Rory will be able to find a base and or a job closer to L.A. Time will tell.

To sum up my experience with this show, I'd have to say that it was more inspiring and more fun than I expected. I am older than today's MTV generation but I am a part of a MTV generation which makes us family. I loved this show and I hope to see more about Chelsea and the gang in the near future.

I hope you enjoyed it as much as I do. Leave me your comments about the show and your experience with it. Be healthy and be happy.

H & M Using Fake Models

Swedish fashion chain H & M admitted to using dolls and computer manipulation to show case their clothes on their website.

Spokesman for the company, Hacan Andersson confirmed it by saying:

"It's not a real body, it is completely virtual and made by the computer. We take pictures of the clothes on a doll that stands in the shop, and then create the human appearance with a program on a computer." He went further saying: "The result is strange to look at, but the message is clear: buy our clothes, not our models."

Check out the full story here.

What do you think of this?

Chelsea Settles: Latest Episodes

Tonight's Chelsea Settles has her going to Vegas even though she has work to do for the Pop-up event for Vanity Room. This of course gives Ashley the ability to take even more of the credit on this assignment. Chelsea just gave her the upper hand.

Either way she has work to do after her dream weekend in Vegas. They most definitely had fun and we see that Devon really likes Chelsea. We all knew that anyway. You can probably guess that they will have Rory causing some confusion with this.

The next episode has Chelsea working on the Pop-up event. She finally finds a space that Laura likes even with Ashley voicing doubts.

Chelsea finally decides that she is going to take charge of what she can and goes gang-busters with making the event work. At one point Ashley actually breaks after Laura gets more demanding towards her. And who goes to comfort her? Chelsea. Hopefully they will finally begin to work together. But I did like to see Chelsea take charge of not only the event but to take the time to help Ashley calm down.

The event was a success and Chelsea realizes the type of job she wants. Let's hope we see her obtain it.

Upstage Beauty Events

Upstage Beauty Events is having its Silver Slipper 'Plus Size' Fall Fashion Show on Sunday in San Antonio Texas. Hosted by Chenese Lewis from Plus Model Radio.

Upstage Beauty Events is a full-service event management and production agency, established in 2010. UBE specializes in upscale, full production fashion events for new and established fashion companies that cater to the "plus-size" or "full-figured" women.

"In this world, presentation is everything and a negative image reinforces bad self-esteem. Having a choice of quality, plus-size clothing promotes self-confidence, self-esteem and positive image." - Mary E. Hall, CEO, PR & Marketing.

We couldn't agree more.

Chelsea Ep. 8 & 9

Last weeks Chelsea Settles was a double header. The first new episode had Chelsea's trainer, Angela, inviting her to a weekend retreat with women in the same place as she. At first she is reluctant but after attending a talk with Jenna speaking about her drug addictions, she realizes she needs to do this to change for the better.

When she gets there she likes the thought of meeting people struggling with the same problem as she does. the thought of group therapy and opening herself up to total strangers to her deepest, hidden problems is another thing all together.

What is amazing is that she actually finds her inner strength to face her demons and also realizes that she doesn't need to stay silent when she feels that she needs to speak up. The therapist asks the girls to try and go back and think of a moment when they felt began them on the road of having a problem with weight.

Chelsea opens up and tells her story but many of the other women dodge the question and do not share. She realizes that she was angry about that and felt she needed to speak up. With a little encouraging from Angela she decides that she can speak up and voice her opinion. She gets the chance to do that on the last day of the retreat when the girls start to bad mouth the food and the cook preparing it.

She does feel the need to clear the air between her and her partner on the retreat. At the end it is probably the best thing she could have done for herself. She takes her new found voice and decides to talk to her boss about being the marketing lead for the store which leads into the next episode.

Let me say first that I believe it is great that Chelsea wanted to better her position at work but the way she did it was wrong. She started by telling Laura that she didn't like what she was doing and that she wanted to do something different. Never, let me repeat that, NEVER tell your boss you don't like what you are doing if you want to continue working for them.

What she should have said was that "I am grateful for what I have had the chance to do for you, but I feels like there is more I can do for the store and this is what it is..."

As any professional person would do, Laura asked what Chelsea feels she could do and after they look at that they would need to see what her future with the company would be, if any. Right there you should get nervous as an employee. Laura does give her the chance to show what she can do by telling her that she had a pop up event for the store and that she would let Chelsea plan it.

The next day when Chelsea comes into work Laura tells her that she feels that the event is too big for just one person to do and asks Ashley, Chelsea's coworker, to help. Right away Ashley jumps at the chance.

Laura asks them to work together and on it and Chelsea begins talking to Ashley about what she feels they could do for the event. Ashley shuts her down and says she works alone and that she should do her own thing and then they can get together to compare what they came up with.

In my opinion I believe that Ashley is part of the MTV scripting of their "reality" shows. She is just too good and too willing to do everything that she seems fake in a way. But that is only my opinion. I do believe that she was wrong in what she felt Laura wanted them to do and that Chelsea was trying to do it right. I hope Laura sees that.

Chelsea does work out her plan for the event and does a great job of it, dressing up and doing a great presentation. But of course it is Ashley's idea that Laura goes with. Now they must work together to get it done and Chelsea seems to look forward at the chance regardless if it is her idea or not.

Chelsea is growing and changing before our eyes and I am excited to see it. One of the sayings I love from the show is from her trainer. Nothing changes if you're comfortable. That is so true. And it is not always comfortable watching her go through some of this.

Tonight's episode will be another double header and should be interesting to see.

Chelsea Settles Ep. 7

In the latest episode of Chelsea Settles, Chelsea's only friend at work, Jenny, quits and sends her into worrying about how she is going to deal working at the Vanity Room. She ends up getting drunk with Jenny and has an awkward moment with Jenna whom she has been avoiding since the last episode.

Laura hires a new girl right away and it makes Chelsea feel that it is a personal attack on her. This is a common theme with her. Her self esteem is so easily shaken that is frustrating to see. You cannot take everything personally. It is a waste of energy and time.

Her new coworker, Ashley is extremely confident and intimidates Chelsea greatly. She attempts to escape and has coffee with Devon, Jarel's roommate, who gives her a much needed pep talk. He is a great guy and I personally hope that they end up together.

Laura, her boss, gives her and the new girl an assignment to get a model and make three outfits for their own page on the Vanity Room website. She stresses about it and feels that it is a test by Laura. Her boyfriend Rory tells her to ask Jenna. The first thing he has done that makes me not dislike him.

It's a great idea and it gives her the opportunity to finally talk to Jenna. They are truly good friends and Jenna is wonderful to Chelsea. Jenna says yes and they finally smile at one another.

They end up going to the photo shoot and Chelsea impresses Laura with her choices and relaxes a bit and thinks that maybe it truly wasn't a test to keep her job but an opportunity to show what she is capable of. Jenna ends up being the one who's confidence is shaken and gets a pep talk in return by Chelsea. Jenna ends up being freaking awesome! She was gorgeous.

Jenna is a great influence in Chelsea's life. They are a great team and friends.

Chelsea Settles Ep. 6

In a recent episode of Chelsea Settles her trainer Angela, surprises her with a visit and goes through her cupboards throwing out everything bad. She was shocked to find that many of the foods she eats that she thought were diet were actually bad for her.

She also has an argument with her roommate Jenna about her single minded ways and not opening herself up to more experiences and stop isolating herself from everyone. I feel her attitude toward what Jenna was trying to tell her was immature. Jenna was trying to help her and she just shut her down.

From personal experience, the most sensitive subjects are the easiest to over react to. Sometimes you must just shut up and listen even if it is painful. Listening teaches you much.

She ends up doing exactly what Jenna tells her and goes to her cousins roommates comedy show. She even asks her coworker Jenny to come with and she does. Chelsea ends up having a great time. I guess Jenna's words sunk in.

Chelsea's internal demons truly hold her back sometimes. She went out to L.A. for a change and she fights that change too often. Her growth continues and it is good to see that people around her not only encourage her but challenge her as well.

Women have Spoken!

Most of us in the plus-size community already knew that curves are sexy. In this story on Source Wire about the survey taken by OneStopPlus shows who women think are the sexiest celebrities.

Topping the list is Marilyn Monroe. The ideal of sexy cures, it is not surprising to see her there.

Contemporary celebrities made the list as well. Beyonce Knowles, Kim Kardashian and Sofia Vergara rounded out the top, with Gwyneth Paltrow coming fifth.

Out spoken curvy model Katie Green applauded the survey saying,

"How refreshing to find a survey that actually shows that curvier women are more desirable. Marilyn Monroe set the standard all the way back in the 50's, and I'm glad that peoples perception's haven't changed! Well done OneStopPlus on highlighting this, as I feel this sort of public information will make a significant contribution to women's health."

We at Curvaceous K™ second her statement and encourage all women to be sexy no matter what your size.

Let's celebrate health and happiness in what ever body we may have.

Chelsea Settles

On Chelsea Settles latest episode, we watched as she worked her first day at the Vanity Shop. I'm not sure if it is part of what MTV wants her to say about certain things or if it is truly her, but her constant talking about how hard it is to have someone "her boss" look over her shoulders all day was a little frustrating for me.

Of course the boss/owner is going to be watching, judging and evaluating your performance in any job you get. It just seem to be over done to my liking.

I always cheer her on and want to explain to her that that is the way life is but it is an MTV show and there has to be some moments that are not going to feel real in my opinion.

Her boss Laura, seem genuinely interested in seeing her succeed. Chelsea told her cousin that she was the hardest boss to work for she's ever had but Laura is not cussing her out or berating her. She is training her, I think, quite well and is being kind if not a bit hurried. She wants her to simply pick up the pace and break out of her shell which is exactly what Chelsea said she wanted to do when she moved.

Speaking of training and fast pace, Chelsea also met her new personal trainer in this episode. Angela meets with Chelsea after giving her card on the beach. She and Chelsea talk about Chelsea's goals for herself, not just weight loss but for life as well.

A wonderful thing Angela does is have Chelsea write a statement to herself. A great idea.

We watch Angela "beat" Chelsea up with a work out that tests her limits physically. She explains it to Chelsea that we need to see where your breaking point is in order to reach your goals. After a lot of tears from Chelsea and lecturing by Angela they finally sit down to have Chelsea read her letter to herself.

It was full of hope and love for herself and it was a wonderful thing to see what Chelsea truly wants for herself. I even thought I saw tough as nails Angela get teary.

All in all, the show is growing at a good pace. Chelsea is finally beginning to find her place in L.A. and taking control of her weight.

But as in any fairy tale story there must be something or someone that threatens to take all the good away. Next week Chelsea's less than supportive boyfriend shows up. Whether this kid is truly a villain or simply a product of the MTV creative writing remains to be seen. We find out more next week.

Eloquii

The Limited opens it's plus-size fashion collection, Eloquii, online in a few hours. With the number of brands making exclusive plus-size clothing being so few it is exciting to see one that has taken the time to listen to the plus-size community.

With "Big" being all the rage on t.v. and the news it will be interesting to see how many more well known brands will jump on the band wagon. We hope they truly do their best work.

Chelsea Settles

So many opinions have been aired about the show Chelsea Settles. Most have been good but some have been erroneous in my opinion.

One blogger stated that they were disappointed that it was not more about the fashion industry. In all honesty, it was never meant to be about the fashion industry, it was to be about a young woman and her struggle with weight loss.

What is surprising to me is how much more we get from Chelsea. Yes this young woman is struggling with weight. Yes this young woman is attempting to make a career for herself in the fashion industry which is notoriously image conscience.

What we get with this show and it's rather naive and sheltered star is more. We get truth. Yes, I understand that this show is made by the same people that made The Hills and Jersey Shore. Shows notorious for their less than "real" reality. But there is something special about this show. At least about it's star.

Chelsea is honest and open. I cheer for her and cry with her. I want her to win and succeed.

The last episode had her going back home to be with her mom after she had her kidney and pancreas transplanted. Her mother does fine but Chelsea feels like she can't go back to California. Her guilt is belayed by her aunt and cousin that reminder her that her family is around to take care of her mother.

In recent pictures Chelsea is noticeably thinner so we can assume that her weight loss has been coming along nicely.

We look forward to seeing more of what this uniquely honest reality star brings us.

Beautiful. Fluvia.

Well known to the plus-size fashion world, Fluvia Lacerda is becoming well known to the fashion world in general. Her latest appearance in Beautiful Magazine has shown again how gorgeous she is. The cover says it all, 21st Century Supermodel. It reaffirms that no matter what your size, a woman's true beauty can shine through.

Beautiful magazine is a new UK periodical that is changing the face of women's magazines. Trying to reverse the damage done by mass media publications is the mission of Sue Thomason the creator of Beautiful. She says, "If you look at the cover of the average women's magazine, dieting and weight loss are mentioned about eight times. These are not lifestyle magazines, they're diet industry advertisements. Beautiful is different."

Bridal Bliss

An area of plus-size fashion that is, in my opinion, not covered enough is bridal gowns. If the main stream fashion industry is finally beginning to see common sense of making clothes for majority of women, the bridal industry is blind to the fact.

The latest 2010 figures from the National Center for Health Statistics puts approximately 65% of American women in the overweight category and of that figure more than 35% are considered obese.

That means that the majority of women are over size 10. Most bridal shops, including high-end, only carry sample dresses which of course are not plus-size in any way. And if they do they are "Ball gowns" and "A-lines." Come on.

In this article on Huffington Post's website from Xochitl Gonzalez. She confronts this issue head on. As Co-founder of Always A Bridesmaid she has experience in this subject in spades.

One bright spot is the show "Say Yes to the Dress: Big Bliss." Let us hope that more light is shown on this subject.

Chelsea Settles

Watching MTV's Chelsea Settles, several thoughts and feelings go through my mind. First thought is how surprised I am at the naked truth this young woman is willing to expose to her fellow MTV generation. The first five minutes you see her ordering food, eating it, saying how much better she feels then weeping guiltily about it. Wow. Second is the comparisons I made to Big Sexy.

This 23 year old girl with all the hopes and dreams as anyone her age may have has allowed us to see everything about her life. Even the most embarrassing parts. We see her struggle with food right up front. Not even the girls of Big Sexy talked about what role food played in their lives.

We learn a lot about Chelsea in this first episode. We meet everyone in her life. Her mother, grandmother, cousin, boyfriend and her future roommate briefly on the phone.

She lives with her mother who is seriously ill with diabetes. She is very supportive of Chelsea and wants her to pursue her dreams even though Chelsea takes care of her.

Her cousin Jerel is her best friend and is moving to L.A. with her and is her biggest fan. We also briefly meet her grandma who teaches her how to do laundry and assures her that she will be around to help her mother when she leaves.

When we meet her boyfriend, we have already learned that he is in the army and has cheated on her. He is not very supportive of her dreams and wants her to move to his base, marry and have kids. Right away I don't like him. But that may be a premature assumption. He is young as well after all. We will see how this plays out later.

We witness Chelsea's experience as she goes to the gym to start her transformation. It is heart breaking to see her being measured. Not what her measurements are but her reaction to exposing so much of herself to the trainer and to us, the audience.

The comparisons of Chelsea Settles to Big Sexy may seem to be only that they are all plus-size women. But they are all trying to make their way through life and the fashion world as large women and how they face the obstacles in life Something many of us can relate to.

Where the ladies of Big Sexy are confidant and sure of themselves, Chelsea is anything of the sort. It is interesting to see how vulnerable she is. She is only 23 after all and taking her first steps into the larger world. The ladies of Big Sexy are in there 30's and established in their lives and have the experiences that Chelsea is now facing.

Chelsea is a newborn to the world she wishes live in. She is tenderhearted and vulnerable and we want to take care of and hope the very best for her. With the BS girls we go along for the ride. We know they will be okay.

One example of the differences in Chelsea to the Big Sexy ladies is the club. Chelsea heads out confidently to her cousin's birthday party at a local club where she waits in line to get in to only be told to stand aside as others are allowed in. Where the BS girls tell the bouncer off about charging them extra to go into the club, Chelsea stands aside and eventually leaves frustrated.

After, she is followed to her car by several drunk asses calling her awful names, bringing her to tears. She does the right thing by ignoring them but I had wished the BS girls were there with her to slap some sense into those flippin' jerks.

I was appalled by those people and I am filled with rage every time I think of their callous and juvenile behavior. It is hard to watch and I hope that the MTV audience feels the same injustice I do.

Afterward she confesses that that was the first time anyone has outright called her fat to her face and she is devastated and you feel her pain.

What I think people will find interesting about this show is watching Chelsea attempt to reinvent herself and grow into a successful adult. As we watch her attempt to lose weight and change her eating habits we are treated to her honesty and bubbly enthusiasm for fashion.

I look forward to seeing Chelsea take control of her life. You want her to win and see her change for the better. I think we will be delightfully rewarded.

Chelsea Settles

On Tuesday October 11th at 11/10 central, MTV premiers Chelsea Settles. A reality show somewhat off track with the normal MTV fair of young suburbanites living together trying to 'keep it real'.

The show documents Chelsea Settles' (I believe that is her real name) moving west to L.A. to pursue her dream of breaking into the fashion industry. Not necessarily high concept for reality television. What makes this one different is Chelsea is a plus-size woman trying to break into an industry that is very weight conscious.

Touted as 324 lbs, Chelsea is not a small girl even in plus-size terms. According to the show's website, she will be pursuing her dreams as well as trying to loose weight, keep her relationship together and deal with a demanding boss.

As America becomes more conscience of the fact that many of us are considered overweight, it will be interesting to see how this MTV generation takes to this subject matter.

Fall is looking Glamorous! Head designer and founder, Yuliya Raquel, has designed a collection inspired by the women of Hollywood's Golden Age.

In this story in Fibre2Fashion.com Yuliya expresses what this collection is about.

"I am so excited about this collection where I was inspired and influenced by the glamour of these beautiful and powerful women who were the original, trend-setting style icons. They took their individual style to such exponential levels that they have continued to awe and impress fans around the world. The strong sense of style that each of these women created transcends time and celebrates the power of femininity for women of today and they will continue to do so for generations to come." - Yuliya Raquel of IGIGI.

In my opinion there is not enough style and grace in today's fashion. Especially in the plus-size world. It is exciting to see this collection and I can't wait.

Lucky Magazine Picks Best U.S. Plus-Size Stores

Along side such well known brands as Lane Bryant and Torrid, Re\Dress was picked as one of the ten best Plus-Size stores in the U.S. by Lucky Magazine.

This is bitter sweet to me as Re/Dress announced recently that it will be closing in November. It is good to see that small shops such as Re/Dress can get such great praise. I hope to see more like in the future.

Mike & Molly star announces Plus-size Clothing Line

Comedienne, T.V. and movie star Melissa McCarthy is planning to launch her own line of plus-size clothing. Voicing the frustration of every curvy woman in the world, Melissa says that there is nothing fashion-forward in her size.

After her experience co-designing her Emmy dress with Daniella Pearl, she "decided to create a clothing line for women with similar body types".

In a story from the Hollywood Reporter she says, "It's either for, like, a 98-year-old woman or a 14-year-old hooker,"

Re/Dress Will Be Closing

I am sad to find out that one of my favorite places to shop for great fashions will be closing it's doors in November.

A New York original, Re/Dress gave plus-size women a fun and one of a kind shopping experience that will be missed.

For three years Deb Malkin brought us a wonderful and exciting shopping experience that will not be replaced. Re/Dress will be missed but more so will be the heart of the shop, Deb.

I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. Thank you for all you have done.

A new place for Bras and Lingerie

We talk a lot about how difficult it is to shop for plus-size clothes but not too much about buying bras, panties and lingerie. Today we found a place opening very soon that you may want to keep an eye on if you are a lady with big girls.

FullBeauty.com is an online lingerie and hosiery shop opening in October that specializes in plus sizes. The wonderful thing we see here are the number of brands as well as sizes they will be providing.

Keep them on your map when looking for a new bra or that sexy piece for that special night.

Nancy Upton on Today Show

Nancy Upton entered the American Apparel XL contest with tongue in cheek photos as a joke and won! Then was abruptly told via email that she was not what they were looking for.

This morning on the Today Show, she talks about her reasons behind doing the photos, AA's reaction and their apparent second thoughts.

It is interesting to find that American Apparel is now going to fly her out to L.A. and have her work with them on their new plus-size line.

Watch the video here.

We Still Want to Hear from YOU!!!

The results of our survey continue to excite us!

When asked the question:

Salon Z Will Be Closing

Salon Z, Saks Fifth Avenue's plus-size section of its brick and mortar store , will be closing soon. With plus-size fashion making it's way forward and plus-size models getting so much attention these days, it comes as quite shock to me.

This USA Today article by Samantha Critchell announced their enthusiasm to help woman of all sizes look their best and mentions some of the brands they would carry in larger sizes.

There is still hope though. As mentioned in this article by John Jannuzzi in Luck Magazine, Salon Z's online presence will still be around. Which may not be that surprising since most plus-size shoppers must do their purchasing that way already.

There is need now more than ever for curvy fashionistas to have a place they can go and find contemporary, fashion forward name brand designer clothing.

This is one of the main reasons Curvaceous K™ is opening and it is exciting!

Bigger Size, Bigger Price

A common problem that many plus-size shoppers encounter is the disparity between prices on an item in different sizes. You may see a dress you like in a smaller size and at a certain price point but when you look for that same dress in a larger size you find that it is up to fifty dollars more!

In this story by the Budget Fashionista, you are shown how Bloomingdale's inflates prices on plus-size clothing. I suggest, as does the Budget Fashionista, that you price compare several stores before making that final purchase.

Amazing as it may seem, higher end stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus are charging less for plus-size items than Bloomingdale's.

I would like to mention that Bloomingdale's is in the process of renovating it's Manhattan store and could possibly be expanding it's plus-size selection. This could also mean that they may be revising their prices.

With the new interest in plus-size fashion in the media, we can imagine that more and more retailers will be catering more to the curvy shopper.

Nancy Upton's Photo Spoof

I have never been a fan of American Apparel's clothes nor their their ads. So when I read this story I was surprised that I had more to dislike about them.

Nancy Upton entered American Apparel's plus-size model search as a joke and won. She created what she believed to be completely unworthy photos of herself chugging chocolate sauce, eating chicken and pie. Little did she know the depth of depravity towards women in general American Apparel had!

In this article she explains her reaction toward the contest and her thoughts on American Apparel in general. It is well worth the read.

Rumor or Reality?

Last year Marc Jacobs hinted that they may be looking into a plus-size line. This week the rumor continued. Robert Duffy says in this story from Plus Size Tall that, We gotta do larger sizes. I'm with you. As soon as I get back to NY. I'm on it!"

Is this more smoke or will we truly see something worthwhile coming out from Marc Jacobs? Time will tell.

Fashion Week Schedule

Here is the schedule for Fashion week. Don't we wish we could see all of it?

Fashion Week is Here

Today is the first day of Fashion Week. And every fashionista in the city is chomping at the bit to see what hot and what is not.

Even though the world looks at what is happening during the day, many of us are looking forward to what tonight brings to us, in the form of Fashion's Night Out. The after party for the first day of the week long event is filled with fun, fashion and sales.

Many stores around the city and boroughs are staying open late to lure you in to take part of their deals and fun atmosphere. The ladies of Big Sexy will be at Lane Bryant on Fulton Street in Brooklyn. With cocktails and a D.J. this should be a fun night.

We hope you all take part in this great night and find your favorite piece for that special look!

Big Sexy Continues to Amaze

Last nights episode of Big Sexy showed us more of the girls personal struggles. We watched as Tiffany Bank was told by her agent that she needed to lose weight! Being a plus-size model is just as difficult as a mainstream model and it was interesting to see this part of the industry. She discovered that she has a thyroid condition and she and her doctor looked into ways to help her lose the weight. We also learned that she was homeless at one time and living in a hostel while she pursued her modeling.

Nikki Gomez broke up with her man and the girls decided that they would throw a dating party for plus-size women and men that date them. Since their experience at the BBW party from last week was less than satisfying, they decided to have interviews with the men before the party to choose who would be allowed to mingle with them. A brilliant idea in my opinion.

Leslie Melik once again showed that she is a motivated and organized lady that is interested in promoting positive ideas about plus-size women. She is amazing.

Book ending the episode is comedian Erica Watson who's comedy show Fat Bitch is becoming a big hit. She is funny and fabulous. She obviously is not ashamed of weight or who she is and we look forward to seeing more of her in the future.

Overall this show is great. It shines light on a subject that many either ignore or are afraid to talk about. Women of all sizes have body issues and it wonderful to see women that face them unflinchingly before an audience of millions. Thank you Nikki, Tiffany, Leslie, Heather and Audrey for letting us into your lives. We look forward to next weeks episode!

Adele. Weight, Body Image and Puking.

Singing star Adele is best known for her soulful voice and moving performances. Perhaps not so well known for being a full figured woman, she talks about weight, body image and puking in this story from Huffington Post.

Running away, puking and anxiety over performing hound her much more than being a plus-size woman ever could. She is very real and we love her for it.

Pop Up Plus Shopping After Party

Pop Up Plus is a unique retail shop that has trendy and hip fashions but has no fixed location. Showing up in random places this shop has made a name for its self mostly through word of mouth.

Founded in 2010 by Camy N, the daughter of a tailor, Pop Up Plus is a mobile plus-size shop that is expanding across the country as well as going international.

They are having an event in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. NY Fashion Week Shopping After Party begins with an opening party Friday Sept 23rd at 6pm.

I went to the event last year and LOVED the variety of stylish designers she had...many of them not easy to come by. I hope to see you there!

NY Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week starts September 8th-15th. This is more than simply a time for the fashion world to show off their latest creations it is also an event that many New Yorkers look forward to.

Fashion Week brings to the city millions of dollars in revenue for local business owners and, of course, gives thousands of fashionistas a reason to max out their credit cards. It's hard to resist that shiny new pair of Jimmy Choo's staring at you from behind the glass!

The first day of the event ends with Fashion's Night Out. A party and shopping spree rolled into one. Several businesses are participating in the 3rd annual event that gets bigger every year. Participating shops stay open late to sell their wares. Put on your most comfortable shoes for you will be running from store to store trying to get all the fab fashions available this year.

Some shops are having celebrity guests. Lane Bryant on Fulton Street in Brooklyn is having a cocktail party with the girls from TLC's hit show Big Sexy at their event starting at 6pm.

Simply put, Fashion Week is a big deal. Here's hoping that you find what your inner fashionista needs to make her smile.

It's about time

For years the plus-size community has been telling the rest of the world that We are the World. The average size of the American woman is 14+, yet the fashion elite have largely ignored this fact in favor of their illusion that women should conform to their idea of beauty.

In this supplement in USA Today from Media Planet the plus-size community is thrust into the spot light in a big way.

We suggest you read The Curvy Fashionista's article about this very exciting news. Thank you Marie Denee.

We will have more on this news soon.

Fashion Industry Adjusting

When Jennette Fulda shops for a dress, she doesn't think only about the color and style. She thinks about how long it will fit her.
She lost 200 pounds between 2005 and 2008, dropping from a size 32 to 12. Then she gained enough to buy clothes in size 18 and 20. When her weight is changing, she doesn't want to "sink 100 bucks into one item," says the 30-year-old Web designer and author from Chapel Hill, N.C.
[PLUSSIZE]Lane Bryant
PROBLEM: Many jeans leave women with a tummy bulge and a gap at the waistband in the back. SOLUTION: Lane Bryant's new $69.95 T3 jeans include a panel at the stomach and an elastic waist band.
The fashion industry is trying new tricks to win over shoppers like Ms. Fulda and address a perplexing gap: Although at least one-third of American women are plus-size, sales of plus-size clothing hover around 15% of women's apparel sales.
To address women's weight fluctuations and other challenges unique to the plus-size shopper, apparel makers are putting a new focus on fit. They are throwing out their old clothing patterns, turning to new slimming and smoothing technology and taking a new look at the psychology of their customers.
Lane Bryant, one of the largest sellers of plus-size clothing in the U.S., with about 900 stores, is working on bras that adapt to a body whose weight changes sharply, says a spokeswoman. "Our customer fluctuates in size. How do we help her there?" says Gill Heer, senior designer and director of intimate apparel for Lane Bryant.
[PLUSSIZE]Anna Scholz
PROBLEM: It's hard to achieve a streamlined silhouette in dressy clothing without wearing serious shapewear. SOLUTION: Anna Scholz puts smoothing 'tricks' into her $372 Dynasty Pleat Shift Dress, such as a tight underlay of fabric to hold in the belly and a looser pleated outer layer.
Avenue, a plus-size retailer with 450 stores in the U.S., reworked the fit of all its clothes over the past two years to make sizing more consistent; shoppers don't want to have to try on several sizes each time they consider a new style of pants. Avenue, which is owned by French conglomerate PPR, also researched the way body shape differs in larger sizes, leading to changes in clothing patterns that made the hip and bust fuller. It introduced a new denim line earlier this month based on the work.
One reason for the sales gap in plus-size clothing is demographic. In the U.S., an overweight woman is more likely to be poor, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.
Another factor: While most retailers consider anything over 14 a plus size, garment sizing can be deceptive, because women's clothing brands are constantly adjusting the sizes. A size 0 today would have been a size 8 in 1970, so more plus-sized women are wearing smaller-size clothes, says Ed Gribbin, president of Alvanon Inc., a clothing size and fit-consulting firm based in New York City. The average size-14 woman today has a bust of 44 inches, a waist of 38¼ inches and hips of 46 inches, he says.
One hindrance to plus-size shoppers—which retailers are just starting to address—is that shopping can be an emotionally complex experience. When a plus-sized customer goes to a mall, she realizes most clothes there won't fit her, and "that's a bummer," says Liz Muñoz, chief merchant at Torrid, a plus-size brand with trendy clothes aimed at 18- to 35-year-olds. "You are up against all those issues in her head," she says.
For years, many clothing makers took little interest in the market, dissuaded by the cost and difficulty of designing clothes in larger sizes. The industry traditionally offered plus-size shoppers low-priced items that tended to cover rather than flatter the body.
If a brand gets a woman's fit and fashion right, "that's a transformational moment," says Ms. Muñoz. "When you do that, you have her."
Getting the fit right, however, is a challenge. As bodies get bigger, they have a wider variety of shapes, industry executives say. "The more weight you carry, the more diverse the distribution of your weight," says Anna Scholz, a London-based plus-size designer who sells high-end clothes.
[PLUSSIZE-JUMP]Hanes;
Hanes's 'Just My Size' line has found that women like their comfortable T-shirts to have a pattern. The company is expanding its line of graphic T-shirts.
Lane Bryant has been making 3-D scans of its customers' bodies since 2004—65,000 women in total. It uses the data to come up with new and better fits. The company learned that about 15% of its customers have a greater than 10-inch difference between their waist and hip, 70% had an 8- to 10-inch difference and 15% have a 4- to 6-inch difference, says Richard Zielinski, technical design director for the brand.
As a result, the company introduced color-coded Right Fit jeans that align with the three shape groups the company discovered. It says the jeans don't gap at the back of the waistband, a common complaint among plus-size shoppers.
The company also used the size information to create its T3 Tighter Tummy Technology jeans, which will be rolled out in stores next week. They use internal shapewear technology like tummy panels to smooth the stomach area. Over about six months, the company created 10 prototypes of the jean. These included an internal-girdle concept that was dropped because it seemed gimmicky and made women "look really bad," creating bulges where the girdle didn't squeeze, says Mr. Zielinski.
[PLUSSIZE-JUMP]Torrid
Designers at Torrid elongate the figure by adding details to the shoulder and the base of the hem, and they often use high waistlines that hit the narrowest part of the body.
Fabric choices can make a crucial difference to a design. "Spandex is God's gift to this industry," says Laurie Williams-Fleury, vice president of technical design for Charming Shoppes Inc., the company that owns Lane Bryant and other plus-size retailers like Fashion Bug and Catherines.
Designers at Torrid consider four typical body types: round, curvy, bottom-heavy and straight. The goal is to make a garment look flattering on all four, says Ms. Muñoz.
The company has learned that customers like clothes that create an hourglass shape and elongate. Details along the base of a dress hem can draw the eyes downward, says Ms. Muñoz. Embellishments like ruffles or patterns along the shoulder and neckline draw the eye up, she says.
Waist lines are generally high, sitting around the smallest part of the body, she says. "Empire waists are a big part of what we do," she says.
Generally, Ms. Muñoz notes, dresses are big sellers, because they are an easy way to look "feminine and fashionable without sacrificing comfort."
Ms. Scholz, the U.K. designer, says her clothes often incorporate "tricks." One of her best-selling items, the $372 Dynasty Pleat Shift Dress, has a tighter layer of fabric underneath and a looser, pleated layer on top that smooths out bulges. The summer 2012 collection will included more dresses with the design, says Ms. Scholz, whose largest distributor is the website of Saks Fifth Avenue.
Getting the fit of pants right is a key challenge. In general, people have a lot of variety in the shape of the lower half of their body. Also, most people are loyal to stores where pants fit them best. Shoppers think, " 'at this store the pants fit me, I'll keep coming,' " says Kristen Gaskins, senior vice president and general merchandising manager for Ashley Stewart, a plus-size retailer with 187 shops in the U.S. The brand is considering a line of pants that include built-in shapewear, she says.
The challenges of selling pants don't end with the design process. At Lane Bryant, narrow-cut "skinny jeans" sell well, but are called "slim." "We don't use the word skinny anymore because it's a turn-off," says Mr. Zielinski. When interviewing applicants for his fit-technology team, he has an important question to ask them: "How can you relate to a curvy person?"
